On Air Conditioning, Heat Pump, and Single Zone Ductless Systems
Heat pumps are a great solution for a home’s HVAC system because they work to provide both heating and cooling. Heat pumps are a very efficient alternative to electric heat. Heat pumps work the same during winter as air conditioners during the summer, running in reverse to heat your home. The system will be matched with an alternate heating source, most often electric heat for those extremely cold winter days.
Heat naturally moves to areas with lower temperatures, but if you want the heat to stay or move to a specific room, a heat pump is ideal. Heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool area to a warm one, which warms your home in the winter and cools in the summer. Heat pumps can either decrease or increase the temperature. As you can imagine when compared to boilers and furnaces, heat pumps are energy-efficient, and they offer inexpensive solutions for those who spend a fortune on utility bills.
As far as comparing new units, heat pumps have SEER ratings like air conditioners and Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) ratings for measuring heating efficiency. Greater energy savings can be obtained from systems with higher SEER and HSPF ratings. Many of our heat pumps have advanced features, such as 2-stage compressors and variable speed fan operation. These features improve the comfort level of your home and provide energy savings.
A heat pump installation is done as follows:
- The condenser is installed outside the house. The condenser is used to convert and move heat and air throughout the home. This unit can be on the ground or mounted to the wall.
- The air handler is mounted inside the house. Ideally, the air handler should be within 30′ of the condenser as you need to connect the two. We also recommend that the air handler is mounted at least 2′ from the ceiling and nowhere close to a TV.
- The air handler and condenser are then connected, and all the cables are covered and stowed.
With the proper heat pump maintenance, your device should last at least 12 to 15 years. However, you should make sure you know how to maintain your heat pump. Also, arrange to have a technician come out and perform a tune-up on the unit once a year.

- Regularly check and clean out the air filter
